Northern Lights and Photography Tour in Rovaniemi

Chase the Aurora – Professional Northern Lights Tour with Expert Photographers

Witness the Arctic’s most magical phenomenon. Our Northern Lights Photography Tour combines genuine aurora hunting with expert photography guidance, led by passionate photographers who know how to find clear skies and position you perfectly for the aurora’s dance.

This 4 to 6+ hour evening adventure offers a personalized, intimate experience limited to just 8 travelers. The activity level is easy—mostly driving and observation with minimal walking. Our professional guide speaks English fluently and is an aurora expert with years of experience in Rovaniemi.

The best season for northern lights is late August through April, with peak activity from November through February. Aurora success depends on cloud cover and solar activity, not guarantees—but we chase real conditions and real skies. Your safety is our top priority, especially in extreme weather.

What to Expect on Your Aurora Hunt

Your 4 to 6+ hour evening adventure begins with convenient pickup from your Rovaniemi accommodation. You’ll receive a safety briefing and an engaging presentation with graphics explaining the science behind the Northern Lights.

We then drive to remote locations with minimal light pollution, carefully chosen as the best spots to witness and photograph the aurora’s vibrant greens and purples dancing across the Arctic sky. Our guide will provide insights into aurora science and Arctic wilderness.

If needed, we’ll travel to Sweden to maximize our chances of clear skies—no passport required. We’re always on time and committed to finding the best conditions.

Our professional photographer will capture stunning photos of you with the aurora using high-quality cameras, delivered to your email via Dropbox link the next day.

We believe you deserve honest information before spending your money. Here’s what every traveller should check before booking any tour in Rovaniemi — including ours.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING AN AURORA TOUR:

Understand exactly what “guaranteed” means

The word “guaranteed” is used very loosely in the Rovaniemi tour industry. Before booking any tour that promises guaranteed aurora sightings, read the small print carefully.

Some operators define a “sighting” as a faint aurora visible only through a long-exposure camera photo — not visible to the naked eye. If the refund policy states that a camera photograph of any aurora counts as a successful sighting, you may receive a photo of something barely visible and no refund, even if you personally saw nothing in the sky.

At Lapland X Tours, our policy is straightforward: if you cannot see the Northern Lights with the naked eye during your tour, you receive a full refund. No camera tricks. No conditions. We only count what you can actually see.

Check the group size — it changes everything

There is a significant difference between a small-group tour and a bus tour in Rovaniemi, and the price alone does not always tell you which one you are booking.

Small-group tours (typically 6-8 people) travel by van, stop at multiple locations, adapt the route based on weather and aurora forecasts, and give you direct access to your guide throughout the night. You are not waiting for 40 other people to get their photos.

Bus tours can carry 20-70 passengers and often drive to a fixed location — a company-owned cabin or kota site — where the bus parks and everyone waits. There is no active chasing of clear skies, and guides cannot adapt the route for your group alone.

At Lapland X Tours, all tours are capped at a maximum of 8 guests. We drive actively across Lapland chasing clear skies and the best aurora viewing conditions — no fixed stops, no waiting.

Ask where the tour actually goes

Many tours advertised as “Northern Lights hunting” do not actually hunt. They drive to a pre-determined location and stay there. Ask the operator directly: do you actively drive to find clear skies, or do you go to one fixed location?

Active chasing means your guide monitors cloud cover and aurora forecasts throughout the night and moves the group to wherever the sky is clearest — sometimes crossing into Swedish Lapland if needed. This approach significantly increases your chances of seeing the lights.

We actively chase every single night. We monitor cloud cover, satellite imagery, and aurora forecasts in real time, and we drive wherever the sky is open.

Check the cancellation and refund policy before you pay

Read the refund policy before you pay, not after. Key questions to ask:

What happens if there is no aurora? Do you receive a full refund, a partial refund, a voucher, or nothing?

What happens if the weather is bad and visibility is zero? Some operators do not offer refunds for cloudy nights.

What happens if you need to cancel? Is there a cancellation window?

What counts as a “successful” tour? This is the most important question. Get a clear written answer.

Understand what photography guidance actually means

Many tours advertise “photography guidance” as an inclusion. In practice, this can mean anything from a guide who occasionally takes photos of guests on their phone, to a guide who actively teaches you how to photograph the aurora on your own camera and helps you get the shots you came for.

Ask specifically: will the guide help me take photos on my own camera and phone? Will I receive professional photos of the tour? How quickly are photos delivered after the tour?

At Lapland X Tours, photography is the core of our experience. We guide you personally through camera settings for aurora photography regardless of your equipment level — from smartphones to professional DSLR cameras. We also provide high-quality photos of your night taken by our guide.

What travellers commonly complain about when booking Rovaniemi tours

Based on honest reviews across TripAdvisor, Google, and travel forums, these are the most frequent disappointments travellers report after booking tours in Rovaniemi:

Being told they “saw the aurora” based on a faint camera photo when nothing was visible to the naked eye — and receiving no refund.

Booking a “small group tour” and arriving to find 20-40 other people on the same tour.

Being driven to a fixed company-owned site with no active chasing or route adaptation.

Receiving no photos, blurry photos, or photos delivered weeks after the tour.

A guide who stayed near the vehicle and did not actively engage with guests or teach photography.

A tour that ended early because the guide decided conditions were poor, without offering any alternative or refund.

We have designed every part of our service to address these specific issues directly. We actively move for clear skies, cap every group at 8 guests, provide real photography guidance, offer a genuine full refund when the aurora is not visible, and our guides are with you throughout the entire experience.
